End Times: It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over

My old Irish grandmother, God rest her soul, used to say, "Ireland will be free five years before the end of the world." I always got a chuckle out of the prophecy. Luck of the Irish.

But I must say all the talk of rapture this Saturday has me spooked. Sure, the six northern counties still technically are part of the UK, so the timing is a little off. But the Queen is on an historic visit of reconciliation to the south, laying wreaths, visiting stud farms, and attending state dinners in Dublin.

The bodice and sleeves of the Queen’s white silk dress were adorned with 2,091 hand-sewn embroidered shamrocks, while a Swarovski-embellished Irish harp was pinned to the left shoulder.

Her jewellery included the Queen Mary tiara, described as a gift to that Queen from the girls of Great Britain and Ireland, and a diamond necklace. Long white gloves, a silver handbag and silver heels completed the outfit. Her ladies in waiting followed in various shades of green.

Shamrocks on the Queen's gown! Ladies in waiting (whatever they are) in green! We're doomed!

Wait, what's that you say? The rapture's not the end of the world. That comes ... in October!? Well, then, pull another Guiness. There's plenty of time.

Seriously, all the end-times talk seems like a sign that the world is a really crappy place for a lot of people right now.
