Negotiating with (Fiscal) Terrorists

Fueled by memories of ancient wrongs (FDR's New Deal, LBJ's Great Society), terrorists (Congressional GOP) seize hostages (federal budget, U.S. economy) and threaten to blow them up (U.S. default) unless all their demands (steep spending cuts, weakened social safety net, balanced federal budget) are met. Negotiations drag on and the populace begins to suffer (Debt Impasse Fuels Sharp Fall in Stocks).

As the deadline (Aug. 2) nears, the key question is, Are the terrorists willing to pay the ultimate price and blow themselves up, too?
